PROJECTS:
Promotional video for University of Toronto (2011)
Documentation of the accompanying installation to the documentary Spoke, exhibited at 2 of 2 Gallery Spoke is an installation by Lulu Wei that was first exhibited at 2 of 2 Gallery, as well as the National Film Board in Toronto. The installation utilizes Wii remotes and Puredata to create an interactive installation that communicates the vulnerability and experience of the urban cyclist by providing a simulated first-person perspective. The installation provides a biking experience through Toronto, which allows the participant to experience the differences between biking on different types of streets. The installation involves a bike with a corresponding projection of a video shot from the perspective of riding on a bike. The bike acts as a controller, allowing the viewer/participant to control the speed of video, correlating the pedalling speed to the increase in speed of the video, which adds to the interactivity of the simulation. Different streets and road conditions are able to be viewed, through turning the handlebars of the bicycle. At any moment, the person pedalling can stop and the video will freeze, allowing the viewer to see the city differently and see a frozen moment in time. The installation hopes to provide the viewer / participant the experience of biking in Toronto and to add to the growing discourse on biking in the city, as cycling issues continue to become a hotly debated subject.
